Understanding the Reality of Spiritual Warfare
Spiritual warfare isn’t a metaphor for the invisible reality underlying every aspect of Christian life. The apostle Paul makes this crystal clear: For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places (Ephesians 6:12, NKJV).

Our battle isn’t with human beings, no matter how they may oppose us. Behind human opposition lies spiritual forces manipulating circumstances and hearts. The Battlefield: Heavenly Places Revealed
Scripture reveals three distinct heavens:
1. **First Heaven – Atmospheric Realm**
This includes the sky and weather systems where birds fly and clouds form. While primarily physical, spiritual activity occurs here as evidenced by Satan being called the prince of the power of the air. (Ephesians 2:2). This is one reason I do podcasting, to speak the word in the atmosphere.
2. **Second Heaven – Cosmic Realm**
The realm of stars, planets, and galaxies. This is also where much demonic activity is concentrated, as suggested by Daniel’s vision where the prince of Persia withstood God’s messenger for 21 days (Daniel 10:12-13).
3. **Third Heaven – God’s Throne Room**
Paul was caught up to the third heaven and caught up into Paradise (2 Corinthians 12:2-4), indicating God’s immediate presence and the ultimate source of all authority. What a Blessing to see.
Our Position in Heavenly Places
Ephesians reveals our current spiritual position: He raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus (Ephesians 2:6). This isn’t futures present reality. We’re already seated with Christ far above all principality and power and might and dominion (Ephesians 1:21).
This positioning means:
– We fight from victory, not for victory
– Our authority comes from our position, not our performance
– We enforce Christ’s victory rather than trying to achieve it

Satan: The Defeated Commander
Satan (meaning adversary) leads the opposition against God’s kingdom. His names reveal his character and methods:

– **Lucifer**: light bearer, his original identity before the fall (Isaiah 14:12)
– **Prince of this world**: temporary ruler over fallen world systems (John 12:31)
– **Angel of light**: his deceptive appearance (2 Corinthians 11:14)
Crucial truth: Satan is already defeated. Jesus declared, I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven (Luke 10:18), and Colossians 2:15 states Christ disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it.

These are individual demons that directly attack believers through temptation, oppression, accusation, and deception. They operate in the most personal dimensions of spiritual warfare.
Your Godly Identity in Christ
Your identity determines your authority in spiritual warfare. If you don’t know who you are in Christ, you’ll fight as a victim rather than a victor. Here’s what Scripture declares about your true identity:

Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God! (1 John 3:1). This isn’t just a title it’s your legal standing with full inheritance rights.
As God’s child, you have been given:

– Protection under His covenant (Psalm 91:1-2)

You Are Seated with Christ
God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus(Ephesians 2:4-6).
Your position isn’t based on feelings or circumstances, it’s based on what Christ accomplished. You’re currently seated:
– **Above** all demonic authority (Ephesians 1:21)
– **With** Christ in His victory (Romans 6:5-8)
– **In** the sphere of divine authority (Colossians 3:1)
You Are More Than a Conqueror
Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us (Romans 8:37). This means we gain surpassing victory or to be supremely victorious. You don’t just win, you overwhelmingly triumph!
You Are Light in the Lord
For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light(Ephesians 5:8). You’re not just carrying light, you ARE light. This identity gives you natural authority over darkness because light always displaces darkness, never the reverse.
You Are God’s Workmanship
For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them (Ephesians 2:10). You’re not an accident or afterthought you’re God’s masterpiece, specifically designed for your unique calling and equipped for victory.

The Belt of Truth (Verse 14a)

In Roman armor, the belt held everything together and supported the sword. Spiritually, truth provides the foundation for all other armor pieces.

The breastplate protected vital organs, especially the heart. Righteousness protects your spiritual heart from condemnation and accusation.

Imputed Righteousness:**
This is Christ’ s righteousness credited to your account at salvation. For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him (2 Corinthians 5:21).
2. Practical Righteousness:**
This is living in alignment with your righteous identity through obedience to God’s Word. Little children, let no one deceive you. He who practices righteousness is righteous, just as He is righteous (1 John 3:7).

– Reject condemnation and accusation

The Gospel of Peace (Verse 15)

The Roman shield was large enough to protect the entire body and was often soaked in water to extinguish flaming arrows. Faith quenches every attack the enemy launches.
